Mail Relay Resources

The SMTP mail relay resources provide virus scanning and spam filtering.

Virus Scanning

The mail relays have the ability to detect suspected virus outbreaks. Messages that correspond to a suspected virus outbreak are quarantined for 24 hours to allow antivirus vendors time to issue a new signature. After 24 hours, suspect messages are released to the original recipients.

Spam Filtering

The relays utilize two layers of protection against spam: reputation filtering and anti-spam filters. Texas A&M central email servers use Proofpoint to identify and block or quarantine unsolicited email (spam). If a message is quarantined, a notification is sent to the message's intended recipient, who can read the message, release the message to be delivered normally to their inbox or delete the message.
