AT&T and Texas A&M Partner to Enhance Kyle Field Wireless Coverage
Published: October 4, 2011
AT&T expanded its mobile broadband coverage at Kyle Field through Texas A&M's Distributed Antenna System. The additional capacity is expected to help improve call reliability and enable more consistent network access for fans attending football games.
The Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is an innovative wireless technology that addresses the increasing demands for cellular services and the need for expanded mobile coverage on campus. Instead of large cell towers, DAS uses strategically placed, unobtrusive antennas connected to a central location via optical fiber. At Kyle Field, 185 DAS sites distribute AT&T's wireless network coverage throughout the stadium. AT&T placed additional antennas in Reed Arena and will also deploy DAS in Olsen Field in advance of the 2012 baseball season.
"We've worked with AT&T to bring enhanced wireless services to fans attending Aggie football games at Kyle Field," said Walt Magnussen, director of University Telecommunications. "With virtually every fan bringing a wireless device to Aggie events, the DAS goes a long way in providing increased bandwidth to help AT&T customers connect and share the most exciting moments of the game."
