Turn Off iPad Data Roaming to Avoid High International Charges

Published: November 23, 2011

Staying in touch via voice, email or online is important while travelling abroad for your department. With advance planning, high phone and data charges can be avoided on departmental cell phones and your laptop's wireless access card (air card) during international travel (see International Travel and Cellular Services).

What about using your iPad or other tablet device outside of the U.S.? International data plans can be purchased, but hefty roaming charges still apply. To lessen overages, turn off data services and use Wi-Fi only.

Enabling or Disabling Data Roaming on the iPad 2

  1. From the Home screen, select Settings
  2. Select Cellular Data
  3. Drag the Data Roaming switch left or right to enable or disable data roaming.
  • On = Data roaming enabled
  • Off = Data roaming disabled
