A secure operating environment is one of the cornerstones of any information technology system. Implementing updated hardware will help ensure the security of the Texas A&M network, and the teaching, research and administrative functions that utilize the network. The current security environment at Texas A&M University is comprised of aging or outdated equipment, all managed as single, point solutions. To take steps toward providing meaningful security for research, teaching and administrative operations, a radical change is required that will involve a connected, centrally manageable network of next-generation firewalls and intrusion protection devices. This project will require strong communication and marketing, as the significant upgrade to the perimeter and campus security will need to be clearly understood by the stakeholder community. The planned implementation mitigates the risk associated with outdated hardware and allows Texas A&M to more closely comply with the Department of Education's Higher Education Opportunity Act. The proposed solution is to replace the existing campus firewall with a connected, centrally manageable network of next-generation firewalls and intrusion protection devices.
