various pieces of tech covered in stickers including a laptop, cell phone, over the ear headphones, airpods, and an Apple Watch

The start of a new semester is right around the corner, and we want to make sure you're prepared to be successful. Tech preparations are necessary, but they don't have to be boring. Here are some fun (but important) tech tips for the upcoming school year.

1. Software
...Obviously

  • No matter your major, you will probably need software for a class during your time at A&M. Visit software.tamu.edu for deeply discounted software.
  • It's up to you to protect all devices that you bring to campus. Use antivirus software to protect your information. Learn more about antivirus software options and other ways to keep your devices safe here.
2. Personalize your device
Tech... but make it fashion
  • One great way to protect your device from physical damage while also personalizing is getting a protective case or cover for your laptop, tablet and/or phone. This doesn't have to be expensive! Amazon is a great place to find something that matches your style and budget.
  • Make a statement and show your personality with stickers! This will also deter thieves since your device will be easily identifiable. Etsy and Redbubble are great online resources to find stickers.
  • At the beginning of every year, University Police Department hosts campus engraving days- you can have your devices engraved with your name and information in case it's stolen. Follow UPD on social media to find out dates.
    • PRO TIP: Write down the serial number for all your devices! If one is lost or stolen and recovered by authorities, you'll need the serial number to get it back .

3. Necessary apps and websites
You need these

  • The Texas A&M app is essential for every Aggie. With the app, you can track bus routes, see which dining areas are open, view how many computers are available at each OAL and much more.
  • DUO two-factor authentication is the app you need to access your TAMU accounts.
  • Pin these sites in your browser:
    • Knowledge base- this website has answers for all of your A&M tech questions
    • Aggie print- email documents to aggieprint@tamu.edu to print. When you find a printer on campus, swipe your ID and your uploaded documents will print!
4. Block out the noise
For [not so] quiet places

  • There are tons of quiet places to study on campus, but you can't always get to them. A good pair of noise-cancelling headphones should do the trick!
  • Did you know that music subscription services have student discounts? Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon all have discounts available for college students.
