Online Shopping Safety

4 Tips for Staying Safe While Online Shopping

With the holiday season around the corner, there is no doubt that with it will come an abundance of online shopping. Some would even say it’s encouraged with all of the holiday deals and days such as “Cyber Monday,” an entire day dedicated to captivating deals that are sure to lure you in. While these deals can be quite enthralling, it is essential to remember the safety of your private information! Here are some helpful tips to remember when it comes to online shopping.

1. VPN

It is crucial to always use a protected network while online shopping. While public Wi-Fi is extremely convenient when you are surfing the web on-the-go, it does not encrypt the information you are putting into a website; such as your name, address, and credit card number. In order to combat this tragedy, try using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your information and keep it safe from those attempting to steal your identity. Texas A&M offers a VPN for those trying to access their website from off-campus.

2. Shop only on secure networks

An easy way to tell if you are on a secure site is by checking the URL at the top of the browser. If there is a lock next to the beginning of the URL, that signifies a secure network. This means that your information is encrypted on the site and is not at risk.

3. Credit Card

Another important tip is to remember to always use a credit card when shopping online, not your debit card. An even better solution would be to use a disposable card number, since it has no trace back to your bank account. While using your credit card online, it can be extremely tempting to click the “remember this card” button —it makes shopping online dangerously convenient! However, it also puts your credit card number at a higher risk for theft.

4. Log out

Lastly, remember to always log out of your accounts online. Leaving your account signed in makes it easier for hackers to obtain your private information.
