To proactively move campus members to more secure Modern Authentication, Microsoft will  soon disable Basic Authentication and require Modern Authentication for all Microsoft 365 accounts. Texas A&M requests campus members update their email or calendar clients to use Modern Authentication by May 17.

Modern Authentication and Basic Authentication are terms for connection methods between an email client on your computer, tablet or phone and the Microsoft 365 servers. Basic Authentication allows campus members to bypass Duo two-factor authentication despite being enrolled. This can make your Microsoft 365 mailbox more vulnerable to cyberattacks.

The Division of IT sent emails to campus members using Basic Authentication to access their Texas A&M email or calendar. If you were contacted, you can find instructions for updating clients and moving to Modern Authentication in the Knowledge Base. You may simply need to remove and then re-add your account information in your client. You may be asked to verify your identity with Duo two-factor authentication. Please note: After removing and re-adding your account, it may take a few minutes for your emails and calendar events to reappear.
