Traffic Engineering (TE) consists of measuring network performance and modifying the network configuration to meet performance goals. Some TE occurs as connection data rates are upgraded or equipment is added or rearranged. Other TE actions consist of automated prioritization and traffic shaping, and policing data flows as they are occurring.

Technology Services uses TE to optimize network performance for the following usages (in priority order):

  1. Research, teaching and administrative missions of the University and associated agencies
  2. Other University and System-sponsored activities
  3. Incidental use by members of the University community
  4. Other activities not restricted by regulation or law

ResNet

Since the demand for network usage within the Residence Halls (ResNet) exceeds available network capacity, an automated traffic shaping system was installed on the ResNet/Internet link. This device limits bandwidth taken up by most peer-to-peer protocols to ensure that other services are accessible.
