The Division of Information Technology continues to upgrade the campus network to increase speed and reliability. Ten buildings received switch replacements and other enhancements during the past year.
Dan Schmiedt, associate vice president of enterprise networks, said the improvements were made with current funding but meet all specifications of the planned Next Generation Aggie Network.
“Our goal is to improve the existing network as much as possible while laying the groundwork for the future,” he said. “We work with local IT support teams to hone and refine our implementation plans to minimize any impact to students, faculty and staff.”
Network enhancements included a Wi-Fi survey that measures wireless signal strength and capacity in all areas of a building. Additional wireless access points were added to fill in coverage gaps or capacity needs.
In the equipment closets of the buildings, state-of-the-art network switches were added to power and connect the Wi-Fi access points as well as any fixed devices that need high-speed wired Ethernet connectivity.
