As part of ongoing Texas A&M network improvements, the Division of IT is conducting “walk tests” using specialized software to examine cellular and Wi-Fi signal strength across campus.

Dan Schmiedt, Associate Vice President of Enterprise Networks for Texas A&M, said such tests were recently conducted around Aggie Park and Reed Arena.

“We always look to improve signals across campus,” he said. “The Wi-Fi results from the Reed Arena tests will be used to tune and enhance the Texas A&M-owned and operated Wi-Fi system in the building. Results will also be shared with cellular carriers and distributed antenna system vendors so cellular connectivity can be improved.”

Results from these and additional walk tests will be used in the design of the upcoming Next Generation Aggie Network to determine where access points (APs) should be added. The new network will double the number of APs across campus.

Schmiedt explained that walk tests will also be conducted in outdoor areas of campus to improve signal strength, especially in high-traffic spaces.
