Overview
Microsoft Copilot Chat and Copilot for Edge are a suite of AI-powered tools that can help campus members improve their productivity and efficiency. Copilot offers data and user protection while providing free access to GPT-4 and DALL-E 3 through Copilot Chat and Copilot for Edge. Employees can use Copilot to get work done faster, be more creative, or support customers. Students can use Copilot to personalize learning, help with brainstorming or receive feedback.
Getting Started
Access Copilot Chat at bing.com/chat and log in with your NetID and password. You will know your data is protected once you log in and see the green “protected” badge. You should also see a message confirming 'Your personal and company data are protected in this chat' above the chat input box and on top of every chat answer.
Microsoft Edge is the preferred Internet browser for Copilot. While Copilot Chatmay function on other browsers, using Microsoft Edge enables the full range of Microsoft's AI-related features.

Service Details
Copilot Chat and Copilot for Edge are available for Texas A&M faculty, staff, and students with Microsoft A5 licenses at Texas A&M University, Texas A&M University at Galveston, and Texas A&M Health. Copilot for Microsoft 365 is not licensed for Texas A&M students or employees at this time.
Guidelines
Security Features:
- You know your data is protected when you log in with your NetID and password and see the green “protected” badge.
- User and university data in Copilot Chat is protected and will not leak outside the university.
- Chat data is not saved, Microsoft has no access to it, and it is not used to train the underlying models.
What type of data can I use in Copilot Chat?
Do not share information that is confidential or higher according to the university data classification. Examples of such information you should not enter include never submit to GenAI tools include:
- Student information
- Personnel information
- Information that the university has committed to keep confidential, for example, in a contract, a grant application, or a disclosure to research participants
- Information about the university that is confidential, proprietary, or otherwise not public
Since these tools have been known to produce inaccurate content, verify any factual information generated by an AI tool, and make sure to reference the tool as you would any other source.
There are many other widely available AI and ML tools on the market that should also be used with caution. Confidential or sensitive university data should only be used with approved university cloud resources and approved university storage. Features
Employees can use Copilot to quickly generate content, analyze or compare data, summarize documents, learn new skills, write code and much more.
Students can use Copilot to better take notes, sharpen their writing skills and refine their study habits.
There are six prompt suggestions you can use: write, create, summarize, templatize, analyze and laugh.
For example, Copilot can help employees:
- Understand the implications of a decision: 'What are the pros and cons of offline marketing strategies?' or 'How can I measure the success of my offline marketing campaign?'
- Learn new skills: 'What are the top five things I should know when managing a large project?' and 'What is agile project management and how does it differ from waterfall?'
- Analyze data: 'If we're forecasting 7% EPS growth this coming quarter, how does our internal forecast compare with EPS growth in the top US public CPG companies?'
- Summarize a work PDFs open in Edge: 'Recap the findings of this internal cybersecurity report and the top three concerns' or 'What are best practices for addressing these kinds of security issues?'
And help students:
- Improve the way they study: 'Give me a quiz to see what I remember about enzyme kinetics for biochemistry' or 'If I paste in my syllabus, can you help me develop a study plan?' or 'Ask me questions to help me study for my upcoming computer science exam.'
- Take better and more efficient notes: 'Summarize the latest World Trade Report from the WTO' or 'If I paste in my lecture notes, can you identify the key ideas and give me some mnemonics to help me remember each topic?'
- Improve their writing: 'If I paste in a draft of my essay, can you help me revise it?' or 'Help me brainstorm for an essay on Okun's law for my macroeconomics course.'
- Focus on their work: 'Ask me questions to help generate a plan to help me focus this semester' or 'If I give you my schedule this semester, can you suggest ways to help me focus?'
